I learned the hard way that "reliable" storage in Dubai mostly means "boringly consistent with paperwork." I moved from JLT to a smaller place in Al Barsha last month and needed to store a sofa, 12 boxes, and a bike for about 6 weeks. First company I tried quoted one price on WhatsApp, then added surprise "packing material" and "lift access" fees on pickup day. I paid, but I was annoyed enough to cancel after week one.
What ended up working for me was ignoring the glossy ads and checking the boring stuff. A friend also sent me their guide, which helped me compare a few options without calling ten sales reps.
Here's what I now ask before booking (and what I wish I asked first):
Do they give a written quote with all fees (pickup, return, admin, VAT)? Is the unit climate-controlled, and do they have pest control logs?* How is access handled, do I book a slot, can I come on weekends?* What is actually covered if something gets damaged, and what proof do they require?* Are they subcontracting the movers, or is it their own crew?
Also, if they push a long minimum contract, I walk away. The decent company I used let me do month to month and sent photos of the items after loading, which gave me some peace of mind.
Side note, reading this Gulf News piece about rents and moving costs lately made me feel less dramatic about downsizing. Everyone seems to be shuffling flats right now.
If anyone has a specific company experience (good or bad), I'm still curious, because I might need storage again when my lease renews.
