What types of pale and dark ales do small British microbreweries typically produce?

Last summer I visited Cornwall and stopped by a few local pubs, mostly to try the beers from nearby microbreweries. I noticed that some places offered both lighter ales and really dark ones, and I started wondering what kinds of beers small British breweries usually focus on. I had expected just one or two standard types, but some were quite creative while still keeping traditional flavors. I’m curious whether small breweries generally stick to classic pale and dark ales, or if they experiment with seasonal batches too. Has anyone else noticed the same variety when exploring local pubs?

From my experience, many small breweries in the region tend to produce a mix of Cornish ales that cover both ends of the spectrum—lighter, refreshing pale ales and richer, more robust dark ales with malt-forward flavors. I found a nice overview on one local microbrewery’s source which explains their beer styles and brewing philosophy. It seems that while they stick to classic recipes for most of their beers, occasional seasonal or specialty brews are also part of their lineup. I’ve tried a couple of their dark ales before, and the balance between malt and hops really stood out, especially compared to mass-produced beers.
