Couples therapy vs sex therapy - what's the actual difference?

My husband and I are thinking about going to therapy, but we're not sure what kind! We argue, like, a normal amount, probably? But lately, our sex life has just completely fizzled out. I'm wondering if we need couples therapy to address the communication issues, or if we need to go straight for sex therapy. What's the real difference, and how do you even decide which one is right for you? Has anyone been through this? It all feels so daunting and a little embarrassing, to be honest. I just want us to be happy again.

It's a valid question; distinguishing between therapy types can be confusing. From my understanding, couples therapy is more about the overall relationship dynamics, communication patterns, and conflict resolution. Sex therapy, on the other hand, delves specifically into sexual functioning, intimacy, and desire. However, they often overlap because those factors are intertwined. I know someone who benefited greatly from the more focused approach and sought out confidential relationship therapy services when they experienced a similar situation. Their therapist helped them pinpoint the root causes of their issues, whether it be erectile dysfunction or a difference in desired frequency. If your primary concern is the sexual aspect, starting there might be beneficial.
