When does a small e-commerce business have to register for UAE VAT?

Hey everyone! I started a small online boutique here in the UAE late last year, selling custom stationery and planners. Business has been picking up nicely, and my monthly revenue is finally starting to grow. However, I’m getting completely overwhelmed by the tax rules. I know that the standard VAT rate here is 5%, but I’m really confused about when exactly I’m legally required to register with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). Someone told me it’s based on a specific turnover amount, but is that calculated by my net profit or my total gross sales? Also, does it look at my past sales or my projected sales for the next few months? I really don't want to break any tax laws or get hit with those massive FTA fines! How can I easily check my registration status?

First of all, congratulations on the business growth! That's awesome. But yes, the Federal Tax Authority does not play around when it comes to deadlines, so you are very smart to look into this now. To answer your first question: VAT threshold calculations are strictly based on your gross taxable turnover (your total sales before expenses), not your net profit. In the UAE, there are two distinct limits you need to monitor carefully: the mandatory registration threshold and the voluntary registration threshold. To make things incredibly simple and avoid doing manual accounting math in your head, you should plug your monthly sales numbers into this free VAT registration threshold UAE checker. It does the exact rolling 12-month calculation for you and tells you exactly where you stand. Basically, the law states that if your taxable supplies and imports exceeded AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months (or are expected to exceed that amount in the next 30 days), you must register for VAT. There is also a voluntary threshold at AED 187,500 where you can choose to register if you want to reclaim the VAT you pay to your own suppliers. Just keep a rolling spreadsheet of your gross sales at the end of every month, plug the figures into that checker tool, and the moment you cross the line, make sure to submit your application on the EmaraTax portal within 30 days to avoid a late registration fine!
