Burned by a toxic church experience
My last congregation had some serious leadership issues that left a lot of us feeling manipulated. Took two years off from attending anything. A therapist actually suggested finding community again might help my healing. What makes a church feel genuinely safe and transparent? Asking before I try walking into any doors again.

Same road here. Left a church that had serious control issues and spent almost three years not trusting anything with a cross on the building. The damage from bad leadership runs deeper than people realize. What eventually shifted for me was finding a place where the pastor talked about accountability openly from the pulpit - not just expected it from everyone else. Bible-based church near me came up through someone who'd been burned before too, which made the recommendation feel credible. Transparency starts with how a community talks about itself. Worth a quiet first visit. Healing is allowed to be slow.
